Earlier this year, Wal-Mart declared that they will be creating more superstores across the country. Now that’s something many saw as a bit of hope since that meant that more jobs will be made and tax revenues for the locales will be paid.
However, a proposed location of a superstore in Virginia is being met with huge opposition including lawmakers and Hollywood actors. The opposition is primarily due to the proximity of the store’s proposed location to the Battle of the Wilderness field.
The battle was the first of the Virginia Overland Campaign as part of the Civil War conducted by Union general Ulysses Grant against Confederate Robert E. Lee. 160,000 soldiers fought from May 5 to May 7, 1864.
Wal-Mart’s board will vote on the issue today.
For sentimental Americans, many consider the establishment of huge commercial structures as an adulteration of the image of American towns. Putting up such a structure is considered to be an insult to the history of the battlefield.
