Top 6 money wasters that often don’t think about

Posted by Alex as Consumer, Tips and Advice

SavingHere’s an interesting bit from Yahoo! finance: Top 6 Mindless Money Wasters. These are six things that you often don’t think about that lose you money.

The list goes:

  • Convenience stores – That store at the corner is open 24/7 so it’s really “convenient” for you to just buy what you need when you need them. But the markup at those stores are sky high. Try it out once. Check out the prices at the corner 7-Eleven and your large mart and see how much money shopping at 7-Eleven costs you.
  • Cell phone plans – Many people just don’t pick out the plan that’s fits their type of use. Not everyone’s an agent who needs to be on the phone all the time. Oftentimes, you might be wasting money on minutes that you don’t use. Or if the inverse is true, then pick out a higher plan. That way, you don’t pay more for the minutes you actually use.
  • Soft drinks – Especially in restaurants. A small glass of soda costs around a bottle when you buy it elsewhere. Go for water. It’s healthier.
  • Bank fees – We’ve already pointed this out. ATM fees when you withdraw from a different bank.
  • Magazines – So you read a particular “reputable journal of opinion” and pick it up from the newsstand biweekly. Why not subscribe instead? You might be getting an issue or two for free if you do so.
  • Credit cards - Annual fees. Interest. Interchange fee on purchases. Why pay more for something that you can get for less?

Let me add a few things on the list:

  • Friday night outs – Booze and and good times that only make a jackass out of you and pound your head with a hangover the day after.
  • Cigarettes - Why spend that much money for something that slowly kills you?
  • Cable TV – $50 a month for hundreds of channels that you don’t really watch.
