You probably want the best smart phone (arguably Apple’s iPhone) on the best U.S. network (Verizon’s) – not the best smart phone on a so-so network or a so-so smart phone on the best network. But believe me, it’s the best thing that could happen to us.

New networks of innovation. Because they have been shut out of the iPhone, Verizon and Sprint pressured phone makers to come up with something to counter the iPhone. This, in turn, allowed Google’s Android to flourish and get better. In fact, according to a Nielsen study, Android had grabbed 27% of recent smart phone subscribers.

With a competing Android around, Apple pressed iPhone’s development harder – improving speed, memory, software, reception, and so on – as they also aggressively drive the price downward.

Smartphone competition is good for everybody. The battle for a good market share has driven Apple, Google, and other Android handset makers, like Motorola, HTC, etc, to innovate. This situation even pushed RIM’s BlackBerry and HP’s Palm to improve at a faster pace at the risk of being sacked off the market.

Competition has also made the networks better. Now, Verizon and Sprint is forced to invest in their networks and keep their customers happy. In return, AT&T has to race to keep up, especially in providing 4G network service.

Eventually, the iPhone will wind up on Verizon. But for now, enjoy the benefits of a competitive market.
