All work and no play makes any one as dull as a brick. If that’s really the case then America is surely going to be filled with dull people in the midst of this financial crisis.

Productivity gurus swear by the 40-hour workweek since studies have shown that humans can only be productive within those limits. The reality, however, is that one can’t live in a single job’s pay to be able to sustain a family, pay the bills, and other necessary expenses.

CNN tells the story of several people who now need to supplement their income with second and third jobs despite having a secure position. With the rising costs and recession hitting everyone hard, keeping at least two jobs is the norm.

Retirement isn’t even an option for some with people over sixty still going through the same rigors of multiple jobs working everyday to be able to support themselves.

Thus, the great dilemma of sacrifice factors in. Breadwinners now dish out more time earning money for their family. They have to choose between spending time with their loved ones or getting to pay for food and bills. That, whichever way you put it, is very unhealthy, not only for the worker, but for the family as well.

Still, for many, they can only be thankful to still have a job in the midst of the worst financial crisis to hit this millenium.
