If you’re transacting business with a government office in Pennsylvania and everyone there seems grumpy, try to understand. It’s hard to provide quality civil service with an empty wallet as state worker’s pay has been withheld.
Pennsylvania is trying to resolve a 17-day-old budget impasse. This, in turn affects 69,000 state employees whose pay from July 1 onward are put on hold. Workers received just 70% of their salary to cover the days worked in June and will not get any on the next payday until the state approves its budget.
When Pennsylvania state workers open their paychecks, they’ll see the words “Budget Impasse Leave without Pay” for the time worked in July. Even after a budget is signed, employees won’t see the money for several days. And they won’t get interest on the money owed, said a governor’s spokeswoman.
To help out with the issue, credit unions are offering workers no-interest or low-interest loans. Workers can avail of them as they wait for the state to decide on the budget. Food banks are also set to provide supplies to employees in need.
