Not all industries have taken a hit in the recession. Nintendo, maker of the amazing gaming console Wii posted record profits.

Nintendo used to be the premiere gaming console maker in the world. Unfortunately for them, lack of innovation past the 16-bit era shifted the power to PlayStation-maker, Sony and eventually Nintendo had to play third behind Microsoft (with the Xbox). With the Wii, however, Nintendo’s back in true contention.

Nintendo saw its net annual profits rise by 8.5%. It made 279.1 billion yen by March 21, 2009 (the end of the financial year) compared to 257.3 billion yen the previous year. This, however, is much less compared to the profit jump of 47.7% in the previous year.

Nintendo invested much on developing more interactive user experiences as is the raves about their Wii console and DS handheld. Nintendo sold 25,950,000 Wii consoles and 31,180,000 DS units last year.
