Microsoft is well on its way to releasing its brand new operating system so creatively dubbed as Windows 7 (RC 1 available here). That’s good news product-wise – an indication that Windows has no intention letting go of their status as operating system king. However, that’s just about all the good news for now.
The company announced that it will be proceeding with its second round of mass layoffs to achieve the target of 5,000 job cuts by 2010. The warning came in the form of an e-mail from Steve Ballmer to all employees.
Microsoft first announced early this year that it will be conducting a mass layoffs cutting 1,400 jobs. The layoffs are part of a measure to save the company $1.5 billion in operating expenses and $700 million in capital expenditure. This, however, doesn’t bode too well for the unlucky 5,000.
“As part of the plan we announced in January to reduce costs and increase efficiencies, today we are eliminating additional positions across several areas of the company,” a Microsoft spokesman said. “While job eliminations are always difficult, we are taking these necessary actions in response to the global economic downturn.”
You can just wonder the effect this would have to Microsoft’s workforce. Perhaps we can expect some Easter eggs from disgruntled employees in their future software releases. To bad there’s a law against that.
