Many would say that those with rock steady jobs should be more than happy that they have jobs. The crappy economy saw many good people with good jobs get sh*tcanned. But what if you’re feeling unhappy with how your career is going, should you consider a career change?

A Free Money Finance reader, posed the question. He’s an engineer with an MS and and MBA. He’s got job security but feels that he’d want to explore more of the business side since he’s practically bored with what he’s doing right now. He’s opened it up to his current employer but feels that changes are taking too long. He asks if changing careers would be a good idea.

My take on the matter? Given better economic circumstances, sure, why not. Job satisfaction is oftentimes viewed as the best incentive over hefty compensation packages. Even if he’s got no huge responsibilities like “no kids and no home,” there’s nothing better than a steady paycheck in these uncertain times.

There really are times when we feel that we’ve outgrown our jobs especially if you’ve pursued graduate degrees but gambling on a career change might not be the smartest thing to do. Sure, you might have to deal with all the drudgery of a job you’re extremely competent in but

The better alternative is to have an outlet – a hobby or a side project that’d help him nurture the side that he wants to explore. Having no kids or budget requirements like mortgage can give him the financial flexibility to do so. This way, he can enjoy the steady paycheck all the while having an outlet that exposes him to things that he really wants to do and breaks the monotony of his job.

And oh, there’s no reason why you should wait for kids to get a home. He could’ve made a killing buying real estate low from late last year.
