Google and BBC to strengthen ties

Posted by Alex as Internet, Technology

What would be possible if the world’s largest Internet search engine ties up with the world’s largest broadcasting group? Media analysts can only try to fathom the possibilities.

Reports indicate that BBC director general Mark Thomson and Google CEO Eric Schmidt are currently in negotiations for a deal that would place more BBC content in Google-owned video hosting and sharing site, YouTube.

Currently, BBC and its programs have their channels on YouTube where clips of BBC programs are available for viewing. BBC, however, makes its own content on its website using a more exclusive technology with the iPlayer. These current talks present a possibility that an international version of the iPlayer might be introduced.

A statement from Google added: “The BBC is one of YouTube’s oldest partners and for over two years we’ve worked with various parts of the BBC to support the distribution, promotion and monetisation of their content. However, we never comment on this kind of rumour and speculation.”
