Clerks are the constant butt of jokes in the former job market but, today, even former desk monkeys are to stack cans and punch keys at the counter with unemployment at 9.4%.
But if Lee Scott, former CEO of retail giant Wal-Mart, has a regret in his 9-year term at the top, it’s not stressing the importance of retail jobs.
“The answer was, of course, one place I would have liked to have done more is helping people understand that Wal-Mart jobs, retail jobs in general, are good jobs,” Scott said. “They pay well and they offer extraordinary opportunities. But the fact is, you just can’t do everything.”
However, during his time as CEO, labor groups slammed Wal-Mart for poor treatment of employees. Wal-Mart recently promised to open up thousands of jobs and with the core benefits like health care.
