AOL used to be on top of the food chain even before Web 1.0 and the dotcom bubble but now, the Time Warner company needs a fresh look and Tim Armstrong might be the man for the job. Armstrong worked in Google as Senior Vice President and will assume the position of chairman and CEO of AOL.

In a statement by Time Warner’s chairman and CEO (via CNN), Jeff Bewkes said, “At Google, Armstrong helped build one of the most successful media teams in the history of the Internet – helping to make Google the most popular online search advertising platform in the world for direct and brand marketers. He’s an advertising pioneer with a stellar reputation and proven track record.”

Armstrong helped institute the first Google office outside Googleplex and was also influential in Google’s operations. We can only speculate what kind of magic Armstrong will be brewing with AOL. Though since, 2008, AOL has been focusing on Internet services and advertising. Will Armstrong’s Google experience, he just might be capable of reinvigorating AOL’s advertising arm.
