There will be no appeasing taxpayers with this bit of news. AIG bonuses are pegged not at $165 million, Connecticut attorney general says that AIG documents now reveal that the insurance giant paid $53 million more upping the estimates at $218 million.

The issue drew the ire of taxpayers and politicians when reports indicated that AIG handed out millions in bonuses despite having to resort to a total of $182 billion in government bailout funds to stave off collapse.

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal reported that documents sent by AIG to his office revealed the discrepancy. AIG previously disclosed a $165 million payout for bonuses to its financial products division with sums reaching to up to $4 million and more to certain individuals.

“Unless the number can be explained, it will undercut any lingering rationale the company may have for these unjustified payments,” Blumenthal told the press.
